The Northwoods Children’s Museum in Eagle River is getting a fresh look this summer, announcing it will begin exterior renovations to ensure the museum remains a vibrant and essential community resource.
The project will involve installing new doors, windows, siding, and a vestibule-style entrance to improve energy efficiency and enhance the overall appearance of the building. Additionally, the electrical panels will be updated.
The children’s museum opened at 346 W. Division St. in 1998. The building, built circa 1972, was previously owned by the Vilas County News-Review.
For over two and a half decades and counting, the children’s museum has cultivated children’s imaginations, with many of the original guests now taking their children to experience the 26 interactive exhibits, STEAM programming, and special events.
Last year, with the generous support of donors and volunteers, the museum replaced the roof, air conditioning units, and water heater, updated the fire detection system, and spruced up the outdoor garden exhibit.
It also made long-overdue improvements to its technology with a new camera and security system, new laptops, a new phone system, and a new point-of-sale system.
The aging building now needs repair and improvements to continue serving future generations.
The museum selected KSW Construction, a local builder based in Rhinelander, to oversee the exterior enhancements. The project is scheduled to be completed in June.
Looking ahead, the museum plans to launch the second phase of renovations, which will expand the museum’s interior to create space for bigger, more immersive exhibits and new creative play areas.
The museum said its vision can only become a reality with the community’s support. In 2024, it launched the Power of Play campaign, a fundraising effort to improve facilities.
“A pledge to the Power of Play campaign will ensure that this beloved institution continues to provide a safe and enriching environment for children in the North Woods for many years to come,” said the museum.
