The Northland Pines varsity football team struggled to keep up with the Crivitz offense’s scoring in a 35-14 road defeat last Friday after entering the game off a victory over Manawa.
Northland Pines didn’t get much momentum through the passing game, but rushed for over 200 yards on the night and two touchdowns. Those scores didn’t come until the fourth quarter. The Wolverines countered the Eagles’ rushing attack with a collective 309 yards on the ground and four touchdowns of their own.
The Wolverines opened the scoring with three first-half touchdowns to lead 21-0 by the halftime break. Even though the Eagles couldn’t put points on the scoreboard in the opening half, sophomore running back Mason Nagy eclipsed over 100 yards on the ground in the game on 12 attempts, which included a long run of 48 yards.
Crivitz tacked on two more touchdowns in the third quarter to push the lead to 35-0. Nagy and Conrad Droby each scored in the fourth quarter to finish the game’s scoring. Droby also had a nice night running the ball, with seven carries for 48 yards and the score. He averaged just about six yards per carry. Senior Trucker Brock added 71 yards to the rushing total on six carries, while Olin Weinand carried it six times for 14 yards.
The Eagles also had to overcome some turnovers, as Northland Pines coughed the ball up four times in the loss. Two came by the way of fumbles, and two were intercepted by the Wolverines’ defense.
Defensively, senior linebacker Ethan Wirth had a great performance with a team-high 13 total tackles for the Eagles. Six of those came from solo tackles. Brady Dumovich, Hunter Tameling, Brock and Jazek Jantzen each had four tackles to their credit as well.
Pines will look to bounce back this next week, as the team has its next two games at home. The Eagles, who sit at 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the Northwoods Conference, welcome a Clintonville team that is looking for its first win of the season to Eagle River this Friday, Oct. 2, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
