Phoebe McElroy, age 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Phelps, WI, on Jan. 19, 2025.
Born on Dec. 30, 1931, in Racine, WI, she was the beloved daughter of Reverend Oliver C. Chapin and Frida Regina Axt.
Phoebe was preceded in death by her husband, William G. McElroy; her brother, Oliver Paul Chapin; her sister, Faith Hogan; and her daughter, Michal Susan Snook.
She is survived by her children, Stephanie Snell of Bethel, ME, Hilary (Lori) Snook  of Merrimack, MA, and Colin (Renee) Snook  of Phelps, WI. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Phoebe graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Luke's School in Racine and went to work at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago.
In 1963, she moved to Phelps where she dedicated her life to caring for others. She began her Northwoods career at the Lillian Kerr Nursing Home in Phelps, then worked with Dr. E.C. Eickhoff in Land O’ Lakes and retired at the age of 65 from Aspirus in Phelps.
She loved to tell stories of her early nursing days when they resharpened and reused needles and washed used bandages. She loved the people of Northern Wisconsin and told stories how during smelt season the men of Phelps would drop off buckets of them. The entire staff would clean them and then staff and patients all had a huge fish fry.
Phoebe had a vibrant spirit and a profound love for her family, cooking, and the Northwoods, where she felt deeply connected to nature. Anyone that knew her will smile and remember her fondness for flip flops.
After being diagnosed with lung cancer, she held a heartfelt celebration of life party to spend cherished moments with family and friends. She wanted to express her gratitude to all who celebrated her life with her during that special gathering.
Phoebe will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her. Her legacy of compassion, strength, and joy will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Private services will be held by the family.
