Playoffs heat up around the North Woods tonight

The WIAA playoffs have already started or are just beginning for many WIAA winter sports, with tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 24, having a handful of regional girls’ basketball games and sectional boys’ and girls’ hockey games for Northland Pines and Three Lakes. 

Starting locally, the No. 1-seeded Northland Pines boys’ take to home ice against No. 4-seeded Lakeland at the Dome tonight in the sectional semifinal at 7 p.m.  The winner will advance to the sectional final this Saturday in Eagle River.

The No. 3-seeded Three Lakes-Phelps girls’ basketball team had a strong regular season and was rewarded with a top-3 seed in its section of the bracket. The Lady Jays are set to host No. 14-seeded Saint Thomas Aquinas tonight in the playoff opener in Three Lakes at 7 p.m. 

Other area teams are ready to hit the road this evening to continue or begin their postseason push. 

The Northland Pines girls’ hockey team, coming off an upset against the Wisconsin Valley Union last week, will take on the No. 1-seeded Central Wisconsin Storm in Wausau at 5 p.m. 

Lastly, the No. 11-seeded Northland Pines girls’ basketball team hits the road to face No. 6 Altoona at 7 p.m.
