Lurvey shines for Jays in first game despite loss

Posted

In what was a fast and furious game between the Three Lakes boys basketball team and Northland Pines Nov. 26, freshman Easton Lurvey dropped in 25 points despite the Jays falling 68-55 in the season opener.
A young Jays team hung in for most of the game with an experienced Eagles team that returns 11 letter winners from last year’s roster.
Lurvey went 10-for-15 from the field including four 3-pointers, while also having three rebounds and three assists.
“I felt like we played pretty well going against a much larger, very experienced, talented and well-coached Northland Pines team. We were able to stay in the game mostly due to the offensive effort of Easton Lurvey,” Three Lakes head coach George Lurvey said about the loss. “In the future, we are going to get things corrected so we have a more balanced scoring effort.”
Seniors Eli Erickson and Peyton Pitlik finished with 10 and 7 points, respectively.
The game started with physicality and a fast pace, which led to the Eagles and Bluejays trading buckets early on.
Lurvey hit a triple amongst other Jays against the constant defensive pressure from Northland Pines.
Three Lakes held a slight 13-12 lead midway through the first half, but the Eagles ramped up the energy and finished the last eight minutes of the half on a 22-10 run to take a 34-23 lead at the break.
The Jays went toe-to-toe with the Eagles in the second half as Pines outscored Three Lakes 34-32 to hold the advantage and pick up the win.
Lurvey said that it was a step in the right direction, especially on the defensive end. He said he has the players that want to play hard-nosed defense and that is something the group will build around the rest of the season.
“Defensively, I was happy with our effort by all the kids. We have some very gritty kids who love to play defense that we will build around,” he explained.
Three Lakes started the season 0-1, with another nonconference game this past Tuesday at Antigo. The Jays will return home this Friday, Dec. 6, against Northern Lakes foe Goodman/Pembine. The game is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
