Tiffany, Crowley to face off in Nov. 3 governor’s race

Alfonso, Clark on ballot for 7th District

Unofficial results are in from Tuesday’s Primary Election to decide who will be on the November ballot for governor of Wisconsin. 

Candidates that will face off in the governor’s race will be Tiffany on the Republican side, and David Crowley on the Democratic ticket. Crowley narrowly beat opponent Francesca Hong, earning 39.8% of the statewide votes to Hong’s 39.3%.

Also decided was who will go head to head for the 7th District Congressional seat that was vacated by Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Minocqua) for his gubernatorial run. Vying for the 7th District seat in November will be Republican Michael Alfonso and Democrat Fred Clark.

Governor’s race

Tiffany overwhelmingly beat out opponent Andy Manske both statewide and in Vilas County, taking 4,139 votes to Manske’s 152 locally. 

Crowley defeated candidate Francesca Hong in a vote of 1,181 to 872 in Vilas. Others vying for the Democratic nomination included Kelda Roys (331) and Joel Brennan (122). Candidates who had dropped out of the race but still earned votes included  Sara Rodriguez (134), Mandela Barnes (132), and Missy Hughes (31). 

In Oneida County, Tiffany earned 5,909 votes to Manske’s 342, while Crowley won 1,955 to Hong’s 1,632. Other candidates earning votes included Kelda Roys (393), Mandela Barnes (258), Sara Rodriguez (240), Joel Brennan (214), and Missy Hughes (45). 

7th District

Both Republicans and Democrats had candidates on the primary ballot for the 7th Congressional District. In Vilas County’s Republican race, Michael Alfonso won handily with 2,202 of the votes, followed by 1,042 for Kevin Hermening, 648 for Jessi Ebben, 196 for Niina Baum, and 129 for Don Raihala. 

Democrat Fred Clark took 1,243 votes, defeating Ginger Murray who had 812 votes and Chris Armstrong, 525.

Oneida County followed suit, with Alfonso getting 2,926 votes; Hermening, 1,641; Ebben, 927; Baum, 534; and Raihala, 138. In the Democrat race, Clark won 1,851 votes; Ginger Murray, 1,649; and Chris Armstrong, 939.

On the Nov. 3 ballot

For the lieutenant governor position, Republican David Varnam will go up against Democratic incumbent Sarah Godlewski; and for attorney general Republican Eric Toney will challenge Democratic incumbent Josh Kaul. Vying for the secretary of state seat will be Republican Jay Schroeder, Democrat JoCasta Samarripa and Green Party Pete Karas. The state treasurer race will be between Republican John S. Leiber and Democrat Lee Yeng Xiong.

For the Assembly 34th District seat, incumbent Rep. Rob Swearingen (R-Rhinelander) will be challenged by Democrat Merlin Van Buren. 

Locally, Sheriff Gerard Ritter and Clerk of Courts Beth Soltow ran unopposed in the primary and are looking to retain their seats this November.

Vilas County saw a 43% voter turnout for the Primary Election. Of its 16,830 registered voters, 7,306 turned out to the polls.
