TLP runners continue dominance on XC courses

Posted

It turned out to be another dominant performance for the Three Lakes-Phelps cross country teams this past Tuesday at the Crandon Invitational, as the Bluejays had six medalists between the two varsity squads.

The girls finished first as a team with 15 points, and had five runners in the top 10 out of 20 runners.

Three Lakes junior Nolan Waltz dominated the boys field and picked up his second top medalist spot of the season in three meets.

The two teams competed against runners from Crandon, Florence-Niagara, Wabeno-Laona, Pembine-Goodman and Forest Park.

Freshman Rebekah Koch and sophomore Rylee Glembin had similar paces, as the two finished next to each other in second and third place, respectively.

Koch finished with a time of 22:16, while Glembin finished eight seconds behind that at 22:24.

Crandon’s Addison May finished over a minute faster than the field to take medalist honors on the girls side.

After that, there was a pretty decent gap in the field, as sophomore Erica Stauffer was the next across the line in fourth place. She held a pace of 7:31 and finished with a time of 23:18.

As the Jays took four of the top five spots, freshman Grace Mandli and senior Ayla Connor ran with each other and both finished at 25:30, with Mandli finishing eight-tenths of a second ahead of her teammate. Rounding out the Lady Jay runners were juniors Madelynn Hanneman and Mikayla Corbett and Raqual Gebele. Hanneman and Corbett took 16th and 17th at 29:38 and 29:48, while Gebele finished at 39:42. Success was also seen on the boys side as Waltz took the top spot in the field for the second time in three meets already this season. The Three Lakes junior had a gap of over 1:30 as he crossed the finish line at 17:02 on Tuesday. Second-place finisher Ryker Schingeck of Wabeno/Laona finished with a time of 18:39.

Classmate Wyatt Gebele rounded out the boys team with a finishing time of 27:46. The team is back in action today, Thursday, Sept. 11, for a meet at Winter Park in Minocqua. Running starts at 4 p.m., with the team competing against Florence, Hurley and Lakeland Union High Schools.
