VCEDC annual campaign helps equip entrepreneurs, communities for success

The Vilas County Economic Development Corporation (VCEDC) has launched its 2025 year-end fundraising campaign in order to continue its work to equip Vilas County’s small business owners, entrepreneurs, and communities with the expertise and resources to succeed.

VCEDC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has a mission to build a strong, diverse North Woods economy.

“The work we do is only possible because of the generosity of the people of Vilas County and our partners in the surrounding communities,” said Kathy Schmitz, VCEDC executive director. “Every dollar donated ensures we remain the trusted, local go-to source to serve Vilas County’s residents, business owners, and communities.”

In 2025, the VCEDC made significant strides including providing in-depth one-on-one consulting to 11 small business owners and hosting 147 participants at seven Lunch and Learn events.

Schmitz also highlighted the launch of the Northland Pines High School

Program to inspire the next generation of Vilas County business leaders along with the sold-out Women in Business networking events. It also made plans to expand offerings in 2026 with a new VCEDC Women in Business program. Efforts to promote Vilas County as a broadband destination through the “Northwoods Charm. Big City Connection” regional marketing campaign also made an impact for the area.

The VCEDC is also a key partner in transforming the former hospital site in the Town of Phelps into a new mixed-use development, receiving praise from town officials. “The VCEDC’s help has been essential,” said Supervisor Jeremy Ryan, who has worked closely with the VCEDC on the redevelopment effort.

“We understand people have many choices when it comes to giving at this time of the year,” Schmitz said. “A gift to the VCEDC is a long-term investment in the economic health and vitality of a place you love.”

She noted that funds raised by Dec. 31 will continue to work for those who live and work in Vilas County. Some of the ongoing endeavors include sustained one-on-one support of small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs while also broadening community business education and the expansion of youth and women entrepreneur programs.

Continued operations of VCEDC are important to the drive of long-term economic sustainability as well as additional development projects.

“Without financial support for the VCEDC, Vilas County risks losing momentum, and that loss would ripple across every corner of this county,” Ryan said.

“Your donation today ensures we can keep building a better future for Vilas County. Thank you for your support,” Schmitz said.

Tax-deductible donations can be made online at vilascountyedc.org or mailed to: VCEDC, PO Box 1621, Eagle River, WI 54521.
