Snowmobile trails in Vilas County officially opened for the winter season last week on Jan. 17 at 8 a.m. This comes after a winter weather system came through the North Woods earlier this month, which also mixed with some bitterly cold weather.
Although the snow depth in the area is still only four to five inches, the Sno-Eagles Snowmobile Club said a majority vote was made last Wednesday to open the trails county-wide.
“The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance, comprised of the 11 clubs across the county, took a majority vote to open and close the trails. A majority vote was reached, and the decision was made,” they said.
Ideally, the club said 10-to-12 inches of heavy snow is needed, but that’s not the case, so early-season riding conditions are expected throughout the county.
“We would like to receive 10-12” of heavy, wet snow. We want more snow to make trails durable and safe. Clubs to the north have better conditions, which led to a majority decision,” said the Sno-Eagles.
Per state law, all Wisconsin snowmobile trails will be closed at the end of day March 31, or sooner, depending on conditions.
