With two tournaments already under their belt, the Wabeno-Laona-Three Lakes varsity wrestling team is off to a fast start with several members earning top-five spots last week as the team competed in the Oconto Invitational on Friday, followed by the John Roberts Scramble in Antigo the very next morning.
“I like the direction this team is heading,” head coach Seth Senter said after the busy weekend of wrestling action. “We have a lot of young kids on the squad this season, and while it has been trial by fire for some, coach (Colin) Schubert and I are pleased to have a mix of young wrestlers who are leaders by virtue of participation in a variety of off-season youth programs during recent years.”
The new year officially started last Friday at Oconto High School. The Rebel Jays were led by Wabeno sophomore Reegan Roy who went undefeated in four matches, including three-pin victories in his 113-pound weight class. Roy was not alone at the podium as teammates Max Clark (120 lbs.) and Jayse Demerath (126 lbs.) were also undefeated at 4-0 in the tournament. Clark also had three pins to his credit, while Demerath had a tiebreaker victory, a pin, a tech fall and one win by forfeit.
Roy led the team in scoring with 40 points, followed by Clark with 32 and Demerath earning 27 points for the Rebel Jays. The team finished in third place with 231 total points. Lena High School led the field with 304 total points, followed by the host school, Oconto High School, with 274.
Just behind the undefeated trio of Roy, Clark and Demerath, was Brody Hoffman, who scored 26 team points with a 3-1 record, including a pin victory over Braidon Roberts of Oconto. Hoffman followed up with a similar performance at the John Roberts Scramble last Saturday as he went 3-1 with another pin victory to his credit.
Roy also duplicated his efforts on Saturday with another 4-0 effort, including 40 team points. Clark and Demerath each had 3-1 match records as the Rebel Jays finished in sixth place out of 18 different high schools with 173.5 total points. Pulaski High School led all schools with 405.5 team points.
Three Lakes senior wrestler Noah Kincaid had a nice weekend, earning four pin victories in nine matches and contributing 19 total team points. Kincaid competed in both events at 175 pounds, which, according to coach Senter, is probably one level higher than his ideal weight.
“Even so,” he said, “Noah is having some great moments on the mat and is a very capable wrestler.”
Other highlights during the two tournaments included a first-time win for Michael Milligan (144 lbs.), who earned a first-period pin victory over Dale Feix of Athens High School. Sawyer Christianson (285 lbs.) had two pin victories, while fellow heavyweight Nolan Milham had 35 points in the two events with three pin victories.
Naaman Stanley (138 lbs.) and Levi Shepard (215 lbs.) also had success during the weekend events as Stanley had a 4-4 match record with four pins earning 33 total points, while Shepard was 4-5 with four pins and 38 total team points.
“These two show a lot of promise,” said Senter. “They are both at the point where they are understanding the sport and have a hunger to win.”
Rounding out the match action for the week, Cameron Tilton (126 lbs.) earned three wins and a pin, while Michael Yeager (138 lbs.) added a pin victory. Worawat Thawonwan (190 lbs.) and Yukon Volk (175 lbs.) had several close matches but did not score victories.
Following a quad meet at Mosinee High School this Thursday, December 12, the varsity team will head to the Forest County Potawatomi Community Center in Crandon for the annual Rebel Jays Invitational on Saturday, December 14, with first matches beginning at
9:30 a.m.
