Bluejay boys take sixth at Eagle Invite with limited athletes

Posted

The Three Lakes boys took sixth place at the Eagle Invitational last week at Northland Pines High School. Because Three Lakes was on spring break, only seven athletes were available to compete for the boys and girls.

The girls team didn’t accumulate points with the four athletes that competed in events.

Three boys combined for 45 points, finishing behind fifth-place finisher Menominee Indian, who had 49 points.

“Nolan Waltz was our lead point scorer with 26 points. Masen Schoeneck was second with 14 points and Zach Weavers scored five points with his fourth-place finish in shot put,” said Three Lakes head coach Nate Koch. “We had several personal records between our seven athletes which is a good place to be for the first meet of the season.”

Waltz ran in three events, taking first in the 800m, second in the 1600m run and second in the 3200m run.

The sophomore ran in heat two of the 800m, dominating the field by over six seconds. He ran the event in 2:11.08, which beat out Antigo’s Rutger Busse who finished at 2:17.44.

Waltz and Crandon senior Taylor Karcz battled each other in both the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Karcz got the better of Waltz in both, but the sophomore took second place (4:40.18) by nearly 20 seconds in the 1600 and again in the 3200 and both Waltz and Karcz ran away from the field in the event.

Schoeneck and Weavers each ran in the 400m dash, and Schoeneck also finished well in a couple of field events. Schoeneck finished in the top half of the 24-runner field with a ninth-place finish with a time of 1:01.84. He finished just over two-tenths of a second behind Northland Pines’ Jackson Olejniczak, who crossed the line at 1:01.63.

Weavers took 16th place in the race at 1:04.65.

Schoeneck competed in the high jump, triple jump, and pole vault, and his best finish was fourth place.

He cleared the third-highest height in the meet at 5-foot-4-inches, which tied with two other jumpers for fourth place. Menominee Indian’s Mikey Chapman won the event by clearing 6-feet-2-inches.

He also took fourth place in the triple jump. Pines dominated the pole vault competition, as Schoeneck took sixth out of six participants.

Shot put was another successful event for the Bluejays as Weavers took fourth in the event to collect five points for the team.

On the girls side, Brooke Neumann, Somerr Ridgeway, Anjelica Zirbes and Annabella Steinbach competed in a mix of track and field events.

Neumann, Ridgeway abd Zirbes finished 29th, 35th and 38th, respectively in the 55-meter dash. Steinbach ran the 800-meter in 3:20.48 and 1600-meter in 7:36.37 for a 12th and 11th-place finish.

Neumann, Ridgeway and Zirbes also competed in the shot put and finished with throws of 22-8.5, 22-7 and 21-8.

Koch was attempting to get the team in an indoor meet this week, but the next scheduled event for the Jays is Thursday, April 3, in Crandon. Events start at 4 p.m.
