Late offense pushes the Windigo to seventh win

Posted

It has been a near-picture-perfect start to the 2024-25 season for the Wisconsin Windigo as it cruised to a 4-1 win over the Anchorage Wolverines last Friday in Eagle River for the seventh win out of eight games played.

The physicality showed early, as there were three penalties inside the first three minutes of the contest. That physical play and top-notch penalty-killing led to no scoring in the first period.

Wisconsin fired eight shots in the opening frame, while Anchorage had 10.

The two teams went nearly another half a period before the Windigo fired up the crowd with the opening goal of the game. Logan Nickolaus buried his third of the season at 8:33 to give Wisconsin the 1-0 lead.

About six minutes later, the Wolverines tied things up late in the middle period with about five minutes to go.

It didn’t take long after that for the Windigo to take control of the game. Alexios Georgaklis untied the game 19 seconds later as they held a 2-1 advantage at the second intermission.

From there, Wisconsin tightened the bolts defensively and only allowed two shots on goal in the third period. Two of nine third-period shots for the Windigo found the back of the net, both coming late in the period.

Elliot Gulley and Jackson Ernst netted goals at 16:09 and 18:48 to put the game away by leading 4-1.

Lucas Szyszka got another win between the pipes after saving 19 of 20 shots.

Wisconsin will return to the ice this weekend with an away two-game series at the Chippewa Steel l, who the Windigo already beat twice to open the season.
