After having a week off between meets, the Three Lakes-Phelps track teams were in Stevens Point April 3 for a meet with roughly 30 other schools, where plenty of personal records were set for the Bluejays.
Outside of sophomore Nolan Waltz scoring the only team points on either side, nine personal records were achieved between the running and field events.
“While he was the only one of our athletes to score points, let alone win an event, it’s to be expected a bit since we’re competing against some bigger schools and lots of them,” said head coach Nate Koch after the meet.
Waltz got his win in the 1600-meter run, where he beat the next-best finisher by seven seconds. He topped the field of 41 runners with an indoor personal best time of 4:39.83.
The sophomore also competed in the 800 and finished fifth, but also set an indoor PR time of 2:10.99.
“Nolan did have a great night. Ethan Potrykus also ran well last night,” stated Koch.
Potrykus ran in the same two events Waltz did, finishing 29th in the 800 and jumping to 17th in the 1600. He set indoor personal records in both with times of 2:27.44 and 5:20.64, respectively.
First-year high school shot-putter Landon McDonald set an early PR in his high school career. He made a throw of 21 feet and five inches.
Teammate and sophomore Zach Weavers took 16th of 77 with a throw of 38 feet.
On the girls side, Annabella Steinbach also ran in the 800 and 1600, setting her own PRs in the process. She clocked a 35th-place finish with a time of 3:16.75 on the 800. Her time of 7:21.14 in the 1600 was good for 28th place.
“Three of our female shot putters also set personal records,” stated Koch.
Brooke Neumann set her personal best at 23-2.75. Somerr Ridgeway threw her high school career best of 22-9 and Isabella Cruckson had a throw of 16-2.
Waltz also competed in the State Indoor Track and Field Championships at UW-Whitewater this past weekend. The sophomore finished 16th in the finals of the 1600-meter with a time of 4:29.27. He also competed in the 800m. Weavers threw a personal best at the state meet in the shot put. Freshman Mason Schoeneck also took 67th in the triple jump in his first season in high school track.
The Jays are not scheduled for an event this week, but will be back in action at the Hodag Dome (pending repairs) on Tuesday, April 15, at 4:15 p.m. They will then travel to Marathon High School Thursday, April 17, with events beginning at 4:30 p.m.
