Phelps hosts first Kiddie Pole Fishing Tournament

Posted

The first-ever Kiddie Pole Fishing Tournament was held recently in Phelps, with fishing taking place on North and South Twin Lakes.

A total of 62 participants joined the fun. “All fishing was done with kiddie poles, like Snoopy poles,” said Laura Boll, director of the Phelps Chamber of Commerce. “It was hilarious and great fun for all ages.”

The event was led by fishing guide Bill Vierkandt’s Musky Adventures along with the event committee, which included Phelps Convenience Center, Phelps Lakeview Lodge, Phelps Chamber of Commerce, and several other volunteers.

Following the tournament, participants gathered at Wavering Park for lunch, awards, prizes, and a casting contest.

Prize money and engraved wooden plaques were awarded for the largest and second-largest fish in each category: bluegill, perch, crappie, bass, walleye, and northern musky.

The overall largest fish caught on a kiddie pole was a 20.25-inch walleye reeled in by Phelps resident Jay Rideout.

Other top catches includes Lance Zeimetz with a 8.25-inch bluegill; Daniel Buettner, 11.125-inch perch; Huntleigh Buettner, 19.5-inch bass; Don Rideout, 11.375-inch crappie, and Dave Selby, 16.875-inch northern musky.

Prizes included an Xbox, a rifle, fishing poles, outdoor gear, apparel, and gift cards to local businesses.

“A huge thank you to all of the volunteers, donors, and sponsors. This wouldn’t have been possible without all the donations,” Boll said.
