Hayden Demerath, THL-Laona-Wabeno wrestling

The Senior Spotlight series will highlight the senior athletes in the area around the communities of Eagle River, Three Lakes, and Phelps. This week, Three Lakes-Laona Wabeno senior wrestler Hayden Demerath is in the spotlight. He is a senior at Wabeno High School and has not wrestled yet this season due to an injury. He was one of the top wrestlers on the team last year and is expected to return to action sometime this season.

What got you into wrestling?
“I started wrestling my sophomore year because I was going with my brother to the gym in the mornings and my coach said that I should think about joining and my parents convinced me to join.”

Do you have a nickname your friends and family call you?
“I earned the nickname ‘hei hei’ from the chicken in Moana from Coach Schubert.”

What’s the biggest challenge in maintaining weight during the wrestling season?
“The biggest challenge maintaining weight is definitely staying disciplined during the holidays and continuing to count my calories and not go over my calorie intake.”

What is your favorite childhood memory?
“My favorite childhood memory is riding around in my go-kart in the backyard during summer with my brother.”

Do you have a favorite meal during the season?
“My favorite meal during wrestling season is steak and eggs with a bowl of fruit on the side. High protein and easy to burn off while also being super delicious.”

Where do you see yourself in five years?
“In five years I see myself working for WPS as an electrical lineman with my own house and a dog.”

Do you have plans for right after high school?
“I will be attending NWTC for electrical line distribution in June of 2025.”
